The Baltimore Ravens have spent much of the past two weeks searching for answers on defense, and Sunday's matchup against the Buffalo Bills is one of their season's toughest assignments.
Containing Josh Allen would be challenging enough for a Baltimore defense that has struggled to stay disciplined through consecutive losses. However, focusing too much attention on Buffalo's franchise quarterback could create opportunities for running back James Cook, who has emerged as one of the NFL's most productive rushers.
Cook enters Week 8 with 627 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 117 carries, averaging 5.4 yards per attempt. Allen has added 240 yards and eight rushing touchdowns, giving Buffalo a dangerous combination that forces opposing defenses to account
for multiple rushing threats on every possession. Buffalo Bills.
Defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver's challenge is balancing pressure with disciplined rushing lanes.
Baltimore struggled in both areas during its 35-13 loss to Cincinnati, allowing 35 unanswered points after halftime. The Bengals scored touchdowns on five consecutive second-half possessions, repeatedly capitalizing on defensive breakdowns and missed opportunities.
Against Buffalo, those mistakes could be even more damaging.
Allen's ability to escape the pocket forces edge rushers to contain rather than attack upfield. Trey Hendrickson and Mike Green must avoid opening lanes that let Allen turn broken passes into explosive gains. However, committing too many defenders to the quarterback could create favorable opportunities for Cook, particularly when Buffalo uses play-action and formations designed to influence linebackers. Roquan Smith and Trenton Simpson will be key to maintaining gap discipline, recognizing blocking schemes, and preventing Cook from reaching the second level.
Baltimore's defensive tackles also must control the line of scrimmage. Travis Jones, Nnamdi Madubuike and Calais Campbell will need to disrupt Buffalo's interior blocking combinations, limiting Cook's ability to build momentum before contact. The Ravens cannot afford another performance in which missed tackles turn manageable gains into explosive plays.
Weaver could also use Kyle Hamilton closer to the line of scrimmage to add run support, but that approach carries risks against Allen's passing. Buffalo's receivers can exploit favorable matchups when defenses commit additional personnel to stopping the run, making communication between Baltimore's linebackers and secondary essential.
The Ravens must also improve their third-down execution. Allowing Allen to extend plays outside the pocket or Cook to create manageable short-yardage situations would help Buffalo sustain drives and control possession. Baltimore has been outscored 48-0 in the second halves of its past two games, a troubling trend that makes defensive adjustments especially important against the NFL's highest-scoring offense.
The Ravens cannot simply sell out to stop Allen and hope Cook doesn't take advantage. They need disciplined tackling, coordinated pressure, and defenders consistently executing their assignments.
To end its two-game losing streak, Baltimore may need to slow Buffalo's rushing attack as much as it limits Allen's passing production.
