The Baltimore Ravens received an injury scare Tuesday when starting cornerback Nate Wiggins was carted off the practice field after going down during a one-on-one drill. Wiggins was covering rookie wide receiver Ja’Kobi Lane on a deep pass from Lamar Jackson when he suffered an apparent injury to his left knee or leg.
According to Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic, Wiggins appeared to be in significant pain before trainers helped him onto the cart. Jamison Hensley of ESPN reported that Wiggins could not put any weight on his left leg as he entered the team facility with his arms draped over members of the training staff.
General manager Eric DeCosta and head coach Jesse Minter checked on Wiggins before he left the field. The Ravens have not announced
a diagnosis or provided a timetable. Until the team completes its evaluation, the severity of the injury remains unknown.
Wiggins entered training camp as one of the cornerstones of Baltimore’s defense. The 2024 first-round pick is expected to start on the outside as part of a talented secondary featuring Marlon Humphrey, Chidobe Awuzie, Kyle Hamilton and Malaki Starks.
Any extended absence would create additional opportunities for T.J. Tampa, Amani Oruwariye, Bilhal Kone and Baltimore’s other reserve cornerbacks. The immediate concern, however, is Wiggins’ health.
The Ravens are preparing to open their preseason schedule against the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday night at M&T Bank Stadium. Wiggins’ status will now become one of Baltimore’s most closely monitored developments as the team awaits additional information.
