The Baltimore Ravens will turn to Jake Moody at kicker Thursday night because Tyler Loop is dealing with an undisclosed injury that could result in a stint on injured reserve.
Head coach Jesse Minter said Monday that Moody is expected to kick against the Jacksonville Jaguars. When asked directly whether the veteran would handle the job, Minter answered, “At this point, yes.”
Minter also clarified that Loop has been dealing with an injury. The team has not disclosed when the issue occurred or provided a specific diagnosis, but Minter said injured reserve is a possibility. A placement on injured reserve would require Loop to miss at least four games.
The injury changes the context surrounding Moody’s opportunity. Although Loop has struggled with
consistency this season, Moody did not defeat him in a kicking competition or take the job because of performance alone.
Moody provides experienced insurance
Moody is currently on Baltimore’s practice squad, so the Ravens must elevate him or sign him to the 53-man roster before Thursday’s game. The former San Francisco 49ers third-round pick has spent two separate periods on Baltimore’s practice squad this season.
The Ravens initially signed Moody after Loop missed three of eight field-goal attempts during the preseason. They released Moody on Sept. 15 after Loop opened the regular season with a strong performance, then brought him back Oct. 20 following Baltimore’s 13-10 loss to Cleveland.
Moody has made 64 of 82 field-goal attempts and 107 of 110 extra points during his NFL career. He converted 18 of 20 field goals while splitting the 2025 season between Chicago and Washington. Minter also has familiarity with Moody from their season together at Michigan in 2022.
Loop’s difficult afternoon adds uncertainty
Loop’s injury comes after an uneven performance in Baltimore’s 36-10 loss to Buffalo. His opening kickoff went out of bounds, giving the Bills possession at their 40-yard line, and he later missed a 34-yard field goal off the left upright. He made a 26-yard attempt during the third quarter.
The second-year kicker is 13-for-17 on field goals this season. He has converted all five attempts from at least 50 yards but is eight of 12 from inside 50. Late for Work
Those numbers created legitimate questions about Baltimore’s kicking situation, but Minter’s update makes the immediate reason for Thursday’s change clear: Loop is injured.
Moody will now step into a high-pressure situation as the 4-4 Ravens attempt to end a three-game losing streak. With Lamar Jackson headed to injured reserve and Tyler Huntley’s status uncertain, Baltimore needs stability from every remaining phase of its roster.
