Not long ago, much of the conversation surrounding Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Rashod Bateman centered on unmet expectations and questions about his long-term future. A disappointing 2025 campaign only intensified those discussions, creating fresh debate about what comes next for the former first-round pick.
Inside the Ravens' facility, however, the tone has remained noticeably different.
General manager Eric DeCosta has expressed confidence in Bateman. Teammates have continued to praise his work ethic and talent. Head coach Jesse Minter has shown faith in the veteran receiver. As training camp rolls on, another voice has joined the growing list of supporters.
Wide receivers coach Keary Colbert arrived in Baltimore this offseasonas part of Coach
Minter's staff. Following Sunday's practice,he spoke glowingly about Bateman when asked about his expectations for the veteran wideout.
"I'm excited for [Rashod Bateman's] opportunity to have a great season. I think that's the great thing about a new season [is that] everything that happened in the past is behind you. You can learn from it, and I think he's excited about this next chapter [and] this next opportunity."
Those comments carry weight because Colbert arrives without any attachment to Bateman's draft status or previous seasons. Unlike others in the organization who have spent years defending the receiver, Colbert's evaluation is based solely on what he has seen since joining the Ravens.
Keary Colbert sees traits worth believing in
Colbert's praise extended beyond optimism about the upcoming season. He pointed directly to the qualities Bateman brings to the receiver room every day. He highlighted Bateman's professionalism, describing him as a player who consistently approaches his job the right way.
"I think he's had a great camp; he's had a great offseason. He's been attentive. He's a smart player [and] he has a very high skill set from a receiver standpoint... I'm excited about what he brings to the room. He is a pro's pro. He comes about his work every day; he's out here every day."
Those observations mirror what many within the organization have said for years. Even during difficult stretches, Bateman has continued to earn praise for his preparation, football intelligence and willingness to work. The Ravens continue to believe in him. Training camp has also offered signs that Bateman could benefit from Baltimore's evolving offense. Colbert recently discussed the flexibility offensive coordinator Declan Doyle is bringing to the system, noting that receivers could be moved around more frequently to create opportunities.
That possibility could be particularly beneficial for Bateman, whose route-running ability and versatility have long been viewed as strengths. Whether that translates into a statistical resurgence remains to be seen. The regular season will ultimately determine how much progress has been made.
What is already clear, however, is that support for Bateman remains strong throughout the organization. From DeCosta to teammates to members of Baltimore's new coaching staff, the message has been remarkably consistent. Despite the outside questions, the Ravens continue to see a player worth believing in. Colbert is simply the latest voice to say so.
