As with everyone else, the Baltimore Ravens have spent much of the preseason evaluating young players across the roster. They're searching for contributors who can force their way into meaningful roles before the regular season begins.
Few players have done more to help their case recently than rookie defensive lineman Aeneas Peebles. He continued his strong summer during Baltimore's preseason win over the Minnesota Vikings. Peebles is a former sixth-round draft choice. He added another productive performance to a growing body of work that has caught the coaching staff's attention.
After the game,head coach Jesse Minter was asked about the young defender's progress and what has stood out throughout training camp. His answer offered insight into
why Peebles continues to find himself around the football.
"Aeneas Peebles has some playmaking instincts. [He's] got some ability."
Those comments may seem simple on the surface, but coaches rarely use the term "instincts" casually. Physical traits can be measured. Size, speed, and strength are easy to identify. Instincts are harder to teach, and they often separate players who consistently make plays from those who merely flash potential.
The Ravens have created a highly competitive environment along the defensive line this summer. That continued during two joint practices vs. the Vikings. Injuries and workload management among veterans have opened additional opportunities for younger players, and several defenders have taken advantage of the extra snaps.

Peebles has been among the most noticeable. Minter pointed to the versatility Baltimore has shown when utilizing the rookie, noting that his effectiveness often becomes even more apparent when the Ravens move him around the formation.
"Whenever we move him and things like that, he's really effective."
That versatility could become increasingly valuable as roster decisions approach. NFL defenses place a premium on linemen who can create problems from multiple alignments, particularly players capable of generating disruption rather than simply occupying blockers. For now, however, Minter seems equally impressed by Peebles' approach as he is by the results.

While discussing the rookie's development, Minter shifted the conversation away from statistics and toward mindset.
"I think he's just keeping his head down, working."
The Ravens coach then expanded on a philosophy he has referenced throughout training camp.
"Control what you can control, and make it a really hard decision."
That message applies to every player battling for a roster spot, but it feels particularly relevant in Peebles' case. The rookie cannot control how many defensive linemen Baltimore ultimately keeps. He cannot control injuries, depth charts, or personnel decisions. What he can control is his performance.
So far, Peebles has done exactly what coaches hope to see from a young player fighting for a role. He has continued to produce when given opportunities, continued to develop within a crowded position group, and continued to draw praise from the head coach.
The Ravens still have roster decisions ahead, but Peebles appears determined to follow Minter's advice. If he keeps making plays and forcing coaches to notice him, he may accomplish exactly what his head coach challenged him to do: make the decision as difficult as possible.
