Baltimore Ravens rookie wide receiver Ja’Kobi Lane has become one of training camp’s biggest stories. The spectacular catches have continued to pile up, teammates are celebrating his plays, and the coaching staff is beginning to discuss how he might fit into the offense.
Lane hears the growing buzz. He simply isn’t allowing it to become more important than his own expectations.
“At the end of the day, you’re only as confident as you can be in your own head,” Lane said, according to ESPN’s Jamison Hensley.

Ja’Kobi Lane is earning everything at Ravens camp
Lane’s highlights haven’t come against passive competition. He has routinely faced one of Baltimore’s deepest position groups, battling defensive backs determined to make every catch difficult.
“There’s been no easy plays that I’ve had,” Lane said. “That’s the only way we’re going to get better on both sides of the ball, being able to give each other our best effort.”
That may be more important than the catches filling social media. Lane isn’t viewing Baltimore’s talented secondary as an obstacle standing in the way of his development. He sees those defenders as partners in it.
Every contested catch forces Lane to become stronger at the catch point. Every physical rep teaches him how little separation NFL defensive backs are willing to concede. Every unsuccessful play gives him another opportunity to correct a mistake before the regular season begins. The Ravens are benefiting on the other side of the ball as well. Lane’s size, catch radius and competitiveness give Baltimore’s defensive backs a difficult target to challenge every day. Those exchanges help explain why both groups have generated excitement during camp.
Lane still has plenty to learn before training camp production becomes regular-season success. Defensive coverages will become more complicated, the windows will become tighter, and opposing teams will begin studying his tendencies.
Still, Lane’s response to the attention suggests he understands what comes next. He isn’t asking for easier reps or letting praise determine how he views himself. He is building confidence through competition and welcoming every difficult assignment Baltimore’s defense can provide.
