The Baltimore Ravens are adopting a new leadership structure under first-year head coach Jesse Minter.
Baltimore announced Thursday that quarterback Lamar Jackson, inside linebacker Roquan Smith, safety Kyle Hamilton, defensive lineman Calais Campbell and running back Derrick Henry were selected as season-long team captains through a vote of their teammates. The approach represents a change from John Harbaugh’s 18-year tenure. Baltimore previously selected captains on a game-by-game basis, often using the designation to recognize players with connections to that week’s opponent or other meaningful circumstances.
Minter’s first Ravens team will instead have five permanent captains representing both sides of the football. Jackson, Henry and Campbell
will provide offensive leadership, while Smith and Hamilton will represent the defense. Campbell is the only captain who was not on Baltimore’s roster last season. The six-time Pro Bowl selection returned to the Ravens this offseason after previously playing for the franchise from 2020 through 2022.
The five captains will also be part of a 10-player leadership council. Tight end Mark Andrews, wide receiver Zay Flowers, long snapper Nick Moore, left tackle Ronnie Stanley, and outside linebacker Trey Hendrickson will complete the group.
The structure gives Minter an established collection of veterans to communicate with throughout the season while allowing the locker room to determine which players will formally represent it.
