The Ravens are bringing back competition at kicker after Tyler Loop’s recent misses renewed concerns about a position that could swing close games. Baltimore officially signed Jake Moody to its practice squad, adding an experienced alternative after Loop missed two important second-half field goals over the past three games.
The timing carries added significance following Sunday’s 13-10 loss to Cleveland. Baltimore fell to 4-2, and a three-point game decided by missed scoring opportunities put them under greater scrutiny. Moody, 26, is a former third-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers who already spent time with Baltimore earlier this season. The Ravens initially added him after Loop missed three of eight preseason field-goal attempts.
Loop
responded with a strong opener against Indianapolis, converting field goals from 57 and 45 yards and making all five extra-point attempts. Baltimore subsequently released Moody from the practice squad Sept. 15.
The Ravens are now returning to that arrangement as they look for more consistent results.
Moody also has an established connection with head coach Jesse Minter from their time at Michigan, giving Baltimore familiarity with both his background and his work earlier this season. The signing does not itself change the starting kicker. Moody joins the practice squad, giving the Ravens an opportunity to evaluate him while keeping another option available.
For Loop, however, the addition brings renewed pressure to turn opportunities into points. Baltimore has already seen how little separates winning from losing, and its crowded division race makes avoiding missed chances even more important.
The Ravens previously brought Moody in and watched Loop respond. They will look for another strong response as they try to rebound from the Cleveland loss.
