Making an NFL roster is difficult. Making one as an undrafted free agent can feel nearly impossible. Every summer, players and Baltimore Ravens fans alike become obsessed with summertime projections. They count players at specific positions. They play the numbers game, debate talent, and attempt to predict which players will survive cutdown day.
Ethan Burke understood those conversations existed. He refused to participate in them. That approach paid off. After a strong training camp and preseason, he earned a spot on the Ravens' initial 53-man roster. That continued one of the organization's longest-running traditions of finding contributors outside the draft. The former Texas Longhorns standout beat long odds and a crowded edge-rusher room to secure
his place.
While speaking to the Baltimore media, he was asked whether there was a moment during camp when he began to believe he had a realistic chance of making the team. Burke's answer revealed the mindset that carried him through the process.
"There are tons of good players who didn't [make it] and have returned, so for me, I was just like, 'I have nothing to lose, [so] just go out there and play fast, don't overthink, don't overcomplicate things, play my best, play how I know I can play and how I've played in the past... Obviously, you're a little stressed or tense, I guess. But, like I said, whatever happens, happens. I can't stress over it and, obviously, I'm happy with the decision, but I just waited patiently, and it went my way.'"
That philosophy sounds simple. In reality, it can be incredibly difficult to maintain. Burke entered camp competing against established veterans, draft picks, and several other young pass rushers for a limited number of roster spots. Most players in that situation would be tempted to study depth charts and calculate probabilities.
Instead, Burke focused on performance.

The approach mirrors what Jesse Minter praised after roster cuts were finalized. The Ravens' head coach specifically mentioned Burke as one of the players who ignored speculation and earned his place through consistent play rather than worrying about how many players Baltimore might keep at his position.
The result was one of the more impressive stories of training camp. Burke not only made the roster, but he forced the organization to find room for him through his production on defense and special teams. Minter later cited Burke's consistency, physicality, pass-rush ability, and special-teams impact when explaining why he survived final cuts.
Now comes the next challenge. For Burke, making the roster was never the finish line. When asked what it felt like to arrive at the facility after learning he had made the team, he made it clear that his mentality had not changed.
He still carries a chip on his shoulder. He still plans to approach meetings, workouts, and practices the same way he did when his roster spot was uncertain.
That may be the most encouraging sign for the Ravens. Burke's journey to the 53-man roster was built on refusing to look too far ahead. The mindset that got him here suggests he has no intention of becoming comfortable now that he has arrived.
