Not every breakout begins with a dramatic moment. Sometimes, it starts months earlier with a decision to change the process. That appears to be the case for Baltimore Ravens linebacker Trenton Simpson. He has emerged as one of the more frequently praised players during training camp. Coaches and teammates have repeatedly highlighted his growth, identifying him as a potential weapon.
Major platforms view him as a true breakout candidate. Meanwhile, respected voices in the locker room agree.Veteran linebacker Roquan Smith says he expects the best football of the young Ravens' career. The compliments have become too consistent to ignore, and on Monday, we were treated to yet another.
During a recent chat with reporters, Ravens inside linebackers
coach Tyler Santucci offered perhaps the clearest explanation yet for why Simpson's development has accelerated. Rather than pointing to a single play or standout practice, he traced the progress back to the work that began long before training camp opened.
"Trent [Simpson] has had a tremendous jump. I think we have adjusted his offseason schedule and what he does and what he spends time on to really fit who he is and what needs to be his direction."
The comment offered an interesting glimpse into Baltimore's approach. Instead of forcing Simpson into a one-size-fits-all development plan, the Ravens tailored his offseason work around his strengths and areas for growth.
According to Santucci, Simpson embraced that approach from the beginning. Development in the NFL is rarely linear. Players often possess the physical tools necessary to succeed long before everything clicks mentally.
Tyler Santucci sees a more confident Trenton Simpson
For Santucci, the most encouraging part of Simpson's progress isn't simply that he improved. It's how that improvement has carried over from one phase of the offseason to the next.
"He has done an unbelievable job of developing that part of it — taking the offseason, transitioning to minicamp, transitioning to now Training Camp, and then showing it on the field."
The praise mirrors what others inside the organization have said throughout the summer. Roquan Smith recently described Simpson as a player performing at the highest level of his career, while head coach Jesse Minter has repeatedly highlighted the linebacker's versatility and ability to contribute in multiple roles. Santucci's evaluation added another layer to that discussion.
"So, I am really proud of where he is at. He is playing with confidence. He is playing with a sense of calmness, and all those things are great to see from him."
Confidence and calmness are qualities that often separate talented players from productive ones. Athletic ability has never been the question with Simpson. The challenge has been turning those traits into consistent, dependable play.
Based on the feedback coming from Baltimore's coaching staff, that process appears to be gaining momentum. Training camp praise alone won't determine Simpson's future role once the regular season begins. Still, Santucci's comments help explain why optimism about the linebacker continues to grow. The Ravens didn't just ask Simpson to improve this offseason. They found a plan that fit the player, and he responded by delivering the strongest camp of his career.
