The Baltimore Ravens will enter their season opener with their most important player energized and ready to go.
During Tuesday's session with the media, Lamar Jackson said he is 100% healthy and feels great physically ahead of Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts, according to Jeff Zrebiec. That is the most encouraging update Baltimore could receive as it prepares to begin a new era under head coach Jesse Minter and offensive coordinator Declan Doyle. Jackson’s availability is central to everything the Ravens want to accomplish offensively. His ability to threaten defenses with his arm and legs creates opportunities for Derrick Henry in the running game and favorable matchups for Baltimore’s receivers.
The two-time NFL MVP has spent the
offseason learning his fourth offensive system as he enters his ninth season. Jackson has praised Doyle’s creativity and described the offense as a “breath of fresh air.” He also believes its movement and versatility should result in a high success rate.
Executing that vision requires a healthy quarterback.
Jackson’s mobility allows him to escape pressure, extend plays and punish defenses that lose discipline. It will be especially important against an Indianapolis front featuring DeForest Buckner, Laiatu Latu, Arden Key and Adetomiwa Adebawore. Baltimore will also have a first-time starter at center, with Jovaughn Gwyn taking over in the middle of the offensive line. Jackson’s awareness and ability to create outside the structure of a play can help the Ravens overcome any early protection issues. The Ravens do not need Jackson to absorb unnecessary contact or rely exclusively on his rushing ability. Henry gives Baltimore an established option for carrying the physical burden between the tackles.
Jackson’s health still raises the ceiling for the entire offense. With no physical limitations entering Week 1, he will have an opportunity to provide an impressive debut for Doyle’s new system and help Baltimore begin the season 1-0.
