The Baltimore Ravens hired Jesse Minter because of his reputation as one of football's brightest defensive minds. He has already served in a successful stint here. Other stops, like his time with the Michigan Wolverines, had earned him widespread respect. New Ravens defensive line coach Lou Esposito was among those familiar with that reputation long before joining Minter's staff.
During his media session on Tuesday, Esposito revealed that he heard plenty about Minter while coaching at Michigan. He had just missed an opportunity to work with him. His two-year tenure (2024-25) came on the heels of one that Minter enjoyed from 2022-23. The praise was consistent, but like many coaches, he reserved final judgment until he had the opportunity to work alongside
him. What he discovered only reinforced what others had been telling him.
"It is crazy because what they said, you sit in a room and you listen and you are like, 'Oh, yeah, that is pretty good, that is pretty good,' but you never really know. Then, I was in a meeting with him for a week and I am like, 'Yeah, it is exactly what they said.'"
That admission is noteworthy because Esposito did not arrive in Baltimore as part of Minter's inner circle. He inherited the same stories, opinions, and secondhand evaluations many coaches hear throughout the profession. The difference is that he quickly had the opportunity to test those perceptions firsthand.
Jesse Minter's reputation matches his reality
Esposito's praise centered first on Minter's football intelligence. The Ravens assistant described a coach capable of seeing the entire picture rather than focusing on a single position group or phase of the defense. According to Esposito, Minter's understanding extends from coverage concepts to defensive fronts and individual technique.
"He is super smart. He has an unbelievable football mind — not only coverage-wise, but front-wise. Where guys should be lined up, where guys should step, how they should place their hands, and he sees the whole picture."
Esposito also pointed to something many coaches value just as highly. He's an admirer of Minter's recall.
"He has an unbelievable memory. He can recite plays from games four, five, six years ago. 'Hey, they did this, so we had to do this.'"
Those traits help explain why Minter's coaching reputation grew so quickly, but they were not the only qualities Esposito highlighted. Jesse Minter is so much more than a football mind.
Throughout Tuesday's session, Esposito repeatedly returned to a theme that has surfaced throughout training camp: connection. When discussing both Minter and defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, Esposito referred to them as "connectors," coaches capable of building trust and bringing people together around a common purpose.
That quality has also emerged in players' comments. Later, during the same media session, veteran defensive lineman Calais Campbell praised Minter's communication style. He described him as clear, direct, and willing to address issues before they become larger problems.
For Esposito, those leadership qualities complement the football acumen. One comment he made may be the most revealing of all.
"I am a better coach being with him."
Esposito entered Baltimore already expecting to work for an outstanding coach. After hearing years of praise from people throughout the profession, his expectations were already high. The surprise was not that Minter lived up to them. It was that, after seeing him operate up close, Esposito concluded the reviews may not have fully captured the complete picture.
