The Baltimore Ravens will have a new kicker for Thursday Night Football against the Jacksonville Jaguars, turning to a former third-round pick who has experienced both success and adversity during his NFL career.
Jake Moody is expected to handle kicking duties after Baltimore placed Tyler Loop on injured reserve Tuesday because of a right groin injury. The move sidelines Loop for at least four games and gives Moody a chance to establish himself with an organization still searching for long-term consistency at the position after Justin Tucker's departure.
Moody, 26, was signed to Baltimore's practice squad for the second time this season on Oct. 20. He previously spent two weeks with the organization in September before being released after Loop
opened the regular season with consecutive strong performances.
The former Michigan standout now has a chance to turn that familiarity into a bigger role.

Jake Moody brings NFL experience and improved recent production
Moody entered the NFL as a third-round selection by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2023 draft, making him one of the highest-drafted kickers in recent league history.
He converted 21 of 25 field-goal attempts during his rookie season, an 84% success rate, and helped San Francisco reach Super Bowl LVIII. However, his production declined significantly in 2024, when he made 24 of 34 attempts, including just four of nine kicks from 50 yards or more.
Moody's struggles continued into 2025, and the 49ers released him after he missed two of three field-goal attempts in their season opener.
The veteran eventually found success with Chicago and Washington, converting a combined 18 of 20 field-goal attempts during the remainder of the season. He made eight of nine attempts with the Bears and 10 of 11 with the Commanders, suggesting he had regained some of the consistency that made him a highly regarded prospect.
For his career, Moody has converted 64 of 82 field-goal attempts, a 78% success rate, with a career-long 57-yarder. He is also 107-for-110 on extra-point attempts.
Ravens need more consistent kicking after Tyler Loop injury
Loop's injury comes during an uneven second NFL season. The former Arizona kicker has converted 13 of 17 field-goal attempts through eight games, including a missed 34-yard attempt during Sunday's 36-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills.
Baltimore also watched Loop miss a critical 49-yard attempt against Cleveland in Week 6, a game the Ravens eventually lost 13-10. Moody provides an experienced alternative, though his career numbers don't necessarily indicate a guaranteed improvement.
His most recent production is encouraging, particularly after making 90% of his attempts with Washington. Still, Baltimore will need to evaluate his ability to deliver in pressure situations and make kicks from longer distances.
Jake Moody has a previous connection with Jesse Minter
Moody's familiarity with Ravens coach Jesse Minter could help his transition.
The two spent the 2022 season together at Michigan, where Minter served as defensive coordinator, and Moody completed his decorated college career. Baltimore also has a connection through senior special teams coach Randy Brown, whose son previously worked with Moody at Michigan.
The Ravens have already had a chance to evaluate Moody in practice this season, making his transition less complicated than signing a kicker unfamiliar with the organization.
With Baltimore entering Thursday's matchup at 4-4 after three consecutive losses, field position and scoring opportunities could become especially important for an offense preparing to start undrafted rookie quarterback Joe Fagnano. Moody does not have to replicate Tucker's accomplishments to help the Ravens. He needs to consistently convert manageable field goals, avoid costly misses, and provide the reliability Baltimore has lacked during critical moments.
The next four games will allow him to prove he can be more than a temporary replacement.
