Ja’Kobi Lane has progressed from an intriguing rookie to one of the defining stories of Baltimore Ravens training camp.
The third-round wide receiver added another highlight Wednesday, making an impressive catch in the red zone as his strong opening stretch continued. Offensive coordinator Declan Doyle believes one specific part of Lane’s game resembles a former All-Pro receiver he previously coached. Doyle said Lane’s ability to snatch the football out of the air reminds him “a little bit” of former New Orleans Saints star Michael Thomas. Doyle also described Lane as a receiver who is easy for quarterbacks to target because of his size, hands and expansive catch radius.

The comparison carries additional weight because Doyle worked for the Saints during Thomas’ prime. Thomas was the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2019 after setting a league record with 149 receptions. Doyle was careful to compare a particular trait rather than place those career expectations on a rookie who has yet to play a preseason game.
Still, Lane keeps giving Baltimore reasons to be excited about his potential.
The Ravens selected the 6-foot-4 receiver with the No. 80 overall pick after he spent three seasons at USC. His size, 40-inch vertical jump and 10½-inch hands made him an obvious candidate to improve an offense that struggled to finish drives in the red zone last season. Lane has displayed those traits throughout camp, making contested catches and giving Lamar Jackson a larger target alongside Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman. His latest red-zone reception continued a pattern established in college, where 11 of his 16 touchdown catches over his final two seasons came inside the 20-yard line.
Baltimore does not need Lane to become Thomas immediately. The Ravens need him to earn a role, sharpen his routes and prove he can consistently produce once preseason games begin.
The early evidence has been difficult to ignore. Lane catches the ball cleanly, provides quarterbacks with a forgiving target and continues to make memorable plays in important areas of the field. For a rookie attempting to crack Baltimore’s receiver rotation, being described as easy to throw to may be the most valuable compliment Doyle could offer.
