The Baltimore Ravens probably didn't expect to spend the week after their home opener searching for lessons following a loss. One might assume they expected to be discussing a 2-0 start and momentum on their side as they prepare for their upcoming trip to Brazil for a third game.
Instead, Baltimore is left dissecting a 24-17 defeat at the hands of the New Orleans Saints and a game that felt very much within reach before slipping away in the second half.
Losses expose truths that victories sometimes conceal. Some of Sunday's takeaways confirmed existing concerns. Others highlighted encouraging developments. All of them feel relevant as the Ravens begin preparing for Week 3.

The Ravens need Zay Flowers more than they would like to admit
This isn't meant as a criticism of Rashod Bateman or the rest of the receiver room. Bateman caught seven passes for 88 yards and a touchdown. Devontez Walker contributed a 47-yard reception. Chris Moore and LaJohntay Wester had their moments as well. The supporting cast did enough to suggest Baltimore's receiver situation isn't as bleak as some feared. Still, Zay Flowers' absence was noticeable.
The Ravens can survive without him for a game. Sunday's performance proved that. What Baltimore may struggle to replace, however, is the stress Flowers places on opposing defenses. His speed, explosiveness, and ability to create after the catch can change how opponents defend the entire offense. The Ravens moved the football at times without him. They looked less dynamic doing it.
The fourth quarter remains Baltimore's final frontier
At some point, the conversation has to move beyond coordinators, assistants, and personnel changes. The Ravens have spent years searching for answers to their late-game inconsistencies. Different players have come and gone. Different coaches have come and gone. Yet the fourth quarter still presents challenges.
Baltimore entered the final quarter with a lead and an opportunity to put the game away. Instead, New Orleans controlled the game's most important stretch, scoring 15 points while finding answers whenever it needed one.
Nobody is suggesting every fourth-quarter issue stems from the same cause. The common denominator is that the issue keeps resurfacing. Until Baltimore consistently closes games like this, the topic will remain unavoidable.
Rashod Bateman is so much more than a complementary piece
Sunday felt important for Bateman. For years, conversations about the Ravens' receiving corps have often centered on who could emerge alongside someone else. Bateman has frequently been discussed as a supporting piece rather than a featured one.
Against New Orleans, he looked like much more than that. Bateman led the team in targets, receptions, receiving yards, and touchdown catches.
More importantly, he looked comfortable handling a larger workload when the offense needed him to. The Ravens may have entered Week 2 looking for someone to help offset Flowers' absence. They may have left with a renewed appreciation for just how important Bateman can be when given opportunities.
Home-field advantage isn't something you can talk into existence
Jesse Minter spent part of the week discussing the home opener and the role the Ravens can play in helping create an environment their fans can embrace. The crowd showed up. M&T Bank Stadium was loud. The energy was there. The anticipation was there. Everything Baltimore could have wanted from its fan base appeared present throughout the afternoon.
The missing ingredient was finishing the job. Home-field advantage is a powerful thing in the NFL, but it isn't created by pregame excitement alone. It comes when teams consistently reward fans with performances that make opponents uncomfortable and leave visitors frustrated.
The Ravens have the crowd. Now they need results to match. One loss doesn't redefine a season, and it certainly doesn't erase what Baltimore accomplished in Week 1. At the same time, Sunday's defeat reminded everyone where this team stands.
The Ravens remain better with Flowers on the field than without him. The fourth quarter remains an issue until proven otherwise. And while Baltimore's fan base remains one of the NFL's great strengths, home-field advantage ultimately has to be earned.
