The Baltimore Ravens face a critical AFC North clash withrival Cleveland Browns on Sunday afternoon. Goal number one seems obvious. Baltimore cannot afford to let Deshaun Watson take over and dominate.
He's enjoying a career resurgence, thanks in part to rediscovering his ability to frustrate opposing defenses. Promising defensive series are transformed into extended drives. The Browns quarterback presents a challenge beyond his ability to deliver from the pocket, because his mobility can punish defenders who lose discipline or fail to finish a play.
Anthony Weaver is well aware of this. His chief concern is ensuring Baltimore executes when the stakes rise. The Ravens have had too many third-down breakdowns, and Coach Weaver didn't pin the problem
on one position group when he spoke to reporters on Thursday. Instead, he acknowledged shortcomings across multiple areas, making the solution a collective responsibility as Baltimore prepares for its AFC North matchup with Cleveland.
"[It's] consistency, really, in all phases of our game is what we're chasing. We had some lapses on third down. Some of that was pass-rush related, some of it is coverage related [and] some of it is coaching related. We're just trying to get consistent in all aspects of our game. I think, particularly against this opponent, it becomes even more critical because [of] how dangerous Deshaun [Watson] can be with his legs. It's something we're obviously stressing, and I know our guys are harping on it and focusing on it as a collective, too."
Third down will test Baltimore's ability to coordinate its pass rush and coverage. Generating pressure means little if Watson escapes the pocket and extends the play, while sound coverage can break down when defenders must account for a quarterback who can create opportunities with his legs. The Ravens need both elements working together, not relying on one player or unit to compensate for another.
"I mean, they kind of reflect [Browns head coach Todd] Monken's personality. [They are] tough-minded, freewheeling a little bit, but they play hard. They play hard, and they finish. I think the quarterback has gained confidence in this scheme, too. I was with Deshaun [Watson] for a few years there, and you kind of see his swagger and confidence coming back a little bit. They have playmakers. I know they're beat up a little bit, as are we. It's an AFC North game, so we know it's going to be physical, and regardless of records, it usually comes down to the end, so it'll be a dogfight."
Weaver emphasized that consistency becomes even more important against a mobile quarterback. Defenders must maintain their assignments, communicate through the play, and avoid opening escape lanes that allow Watson to improvise. Even when the initial rush appears successful, losing containment can give Cleveland another chance to move the chains.
The challenge is particularly relevant against a Browns offense led by Todd Monken, who knows Baltimore's personnel and defensive tendencies from his time with the Ravens. Weaver's comments suggest the defense can't rely on pressure or coverage in isolation; it must execute its responsibilities together and finish the plays it starts.
Limiting the Browns offense demands a complete defensive effort
Watson's mobility makes discipline essential, but containment alone won't fix Baltimore's third-down issues. The pass rush must affect the quarterback without sacrificing its lanes, the secondary must sustain coverage, and the coaching staff must put players in positions to succeed. Weaver's willingness to acknowledge all three areas reflects the scope of the correction Baltimore needs.
The Ravens have reasons to be encouraged after their overtimewin over the Atlanta Falcons, but Weaver has stressed that one successful Sunday doesn't guarantee another. Cleveland presents a different set of problems, and Baltimore must show that its defense can respond when an opponent tests its weaknesses.
For the Ravens, the priority is clear. Turn third down into a chance to end drives, not another opportunity for Watson to extend them. If Baltimore can combine disciplined pressure with reliable coverage, it will be better positioned to control the game rather than let Cleveland dictate the terms.
