Auburn football bounced back in a big way on Saturday, taking down Vanderbilt in Jordan-Hare Stadium, 21-15.
The win marked Auburn's first over an SEC opponent at home since 2024, a streak ending at 672 days and six SEC games. It was also Alex Golesh's first win over an SEC opponent since taking over as Auburn's head coach last offseason.
Auburn's defense stayed on the field for over 37 minutes on Saturday and allowed Vanderbilt to gain 311 yards of total offense. However, the defense played a major role in the win thanks to standing tall in key situations.
Vanderbilt was forced to punt four times in the first half, and only one of their six first-half drives ended in points: a field goal with 9:29 in the 1st quarter, which was set up by an Auburn
interception that was recovered at the Auburn 24-yard line. Vanderbilt also strung together two drives in the second half that lasted over seven minutes and resulted in just 10 points.
The Tigers' defense also shook off its abysmal 3rd-down defensive performance last week, where it allowed Florida to convert 7-of-15 3rd-down plays and 4-of-5 3rd-and-long situations, by limiting Vanderbilt to convert just 4-of-17 3rd-down attempts, and 1-of-8 in 3rd-and-short.
Several players deserve recognition for their strong performances on defense. Here are this week's "Tigers of the Game" from Auburn football's 21-15 win over Vanderbilt on Saturday.
Taylor Jones: Kaleb Harris
Kaleb Harris followed up his strong showing in the Florida game by adding six more tackles to his season total. Harris has logged at least six tackles in three of Auburn's four games so far this season.
Phillip Jordan: Xavier Atkins
Atkins appeared to be back to his old self on Saturday as he held the team lead in tackles with eight. Among those eight stops, Atkins recorded three tackles for loss and one sack.
Jac Myrick: Elijah Melendez
It was a normal day at the office for linebacker Elijah Melendez, who logged five tackles in Auburn's win over Vanderbilt. The sophomore is up to 34 tackles through four games.
Fan vote: Xavier Atkins
Auburn fans have spoken, and they have voted linebacker Xavier Atkins as their pick for "Tiger of the Game" for Auburn's 21-15 win over Vanderbilt on Saturday. Atkins received 77% of the vote, beating out Byrum Brown, Elijah Melendez, and Kaleb Harris.
