Auburn basketball is trending for a pair of 2027 five-star forwards from the Peach State.
The Auburn Tigers are in a tight race with several of college basketball's top programs for the signatures of AJ Williams (McDonough, Georgia) and Asa Montgomery (McDonough, Georgia), with early signing day approaching.
The Tigers are competing with SEC rivals Mississippi State, Georgia, and Arkansas, as well as North Carolina and BYU for Williams, the No. 1 player from Georgia and the No. 5 overall player in the 2027 recruiting cycle. Williams tells Jamie Shaw of Rivals he has a strong relationship with Auburn head coach Steven Pearl, and has strong ties to the orange and blue.
"My parents actually met at Auburn High School, and a lot of my dad’s side of the
family lives right by there," Williams said via Rivals. "When I was on campus, a bunch of kids were coming up to me saying, “Hey, I know your auntie. I know your cousin.” My family is right there."
Montgomery trails Williams in Rivals' rankings at No. 8 nationally and No. 2 in Georgia, and is known as a versatile player who brings high energy to the floor. Montgomery recalled a great visit to Auburn last year with Shaw and says he has a strong relationship with Steven Pearl, and that the two are in constant contact. Duke, North Carolina, LSU, and Georgia Tech are viewed as Auburn's strongest competition in its pursuit of Montgomery.
Can we expect a commitment announcement from either of these talented forwards soon? Both tell Shaw they plan to take their time to decide where to sign. However, Auburn is in a great spot to land each of them. Georgia Tech is the favorite to land Montgomery, according to Rivals, at 15%, with Auburn next at 13%. Auburn is the current favorite to land Williams with a 31% forecast, followed by Georgia at 21%.
Auburn basketball holds the No. 12 class in the 2027 recruiting cycle according to Rivals, with two commitments, forward Davis Cochran and guard Jason Gardner Jr.
