There is no doubt that Auburn safety Champ Anthony is a good football player.
The last two seasons, he has proven to be a playmaker for the Auburn defense when on the field. The downside has been the injury issues he has had over the last two seasons. He enters this season healthy, and head coach Alex Golesh sees the importance of Anthony to name him a team captain.
"It's always a blessing to be chosen to lead this team and to step out there, especially for the coin toss," Anthony said after Auburn's 17-16 win over Baylor on Saturday. "Like not every football player gets to do that. Not every player gets to play college football, but not everybody gets to be a captain of a college football team. I take that with pride and honor, and I try to play my
heart out for the boys because they lean on me and waiting for me to lead."
On Saturday, Anthony had four tackles in the Tigers'win over Baylor. It was a game that saw the Tigers prevent the Bears from adding points despite moving the ball for 436 yards and 333 yards through the air. That is a carryover from last season's defense led by defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin.
"That's just our coaching. We play hard defense and run the ball. That's what we do. No matter what's going on, who is where, what's going on, Auburn is going to play great defense. That's what we do. We hang our hat on that, "said Anthony on the Tigers' defense.
A healthy Anthony, along with rising star Eric Winters in the defensive backfield, will make the Tigers a tough team to score on this season.
