Whenever teams game plan for the Auburn Tigers this season, their top defensive priority is going to be to stop quarterback Byrum Brown.
People will look at the three interceptions in the Baylor game, and that part needs to be fixed for Auburn to have success. However, he was good in other spots as the quarterback on Saturday. One statistic to look at is that he was 8 of 12 on third down for 110 yards. Of course, there was the game-winning rushing touchdown.
Southern Miss head coach Blake Anderson knows the Auburn offense begins and ends with Brown.
"Really kind of go back and look at him over his career, and I mean it starts and ends with him," Anderson said this week. "He makes it go. He is a big physical specimen with a ton of confidence, and we got
to keep him in the pocket. Hard to do. We got to get him on the ground."
Southern Miss did not have much trouble on Saturday in their 49-3 win over Alcorn State. The Braves did not present the same challenge they are about to meet with when they visit the Plains. Anderson mentioned that things are about to speed up with his team this Saturday.
"He can be a huge challenge for us just in one-on-one settings alone," Anderson continued when talking about Brown. "But really, he can do everything. He can throw it, he can run it, and it makes the field really big."
Eventually, Brown's ability to run will force opposing teams to bring an extra defender from the secondary. Brown has the ability to make defenses pay with the deep ball when that happens. He just has to make better decisions and not force the ball into bad situations.
