Former Auburn golfer Jackson Koivun is turning in one of the best performances of his young professional career.
Koivun enters Sunday's action at the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities 20 under par, which is good enough to take the top spot on the leaderboard ahead of the final day of action. He holds a three-stroke lead over Emiliano Grillo and Ben Kohles, and is six strokes ahead of PGA mainstay Scottie Scheffler.
Koivun created separation on the leaderboard by finishing 10 under in Saturday's round three action and scoring a record-setting 28 on the back nine. He also set a 54-hole record by scoring 64 in Thursday's portion and 68 on Friday, changing the record to 193.
Holding onto such a large lead and ultimately winning the event will be a challenge
for Koivun, but perservering under this type of pressure is what led him to win two NCAA titles during his time at Auburn.
“Playing at Auburn was so much fun. We were definitely put in some stressful situations at national championships and just collegiate play,” Koivun said in an interview with Golf Channel. “I’m just trying to lean on those experiences.”
Koivun will take the championship mindset he learned from his time at Auburn with him into Sunday's action, and understands there are many hungry competitors behind him aiming to dethrone him. Koivun plans to utilize his familiar, yet simple strategy to close out the event with the crown.
“Just got to keep the foot on the gas,” Koivun said.
The final day of the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota begins Sunday at 7 a.m. CT, with Koivun grabbing the final tee time of the day at 12:40 p.m. CT. Live coverage of the final day of the 3M Open will air on Golf Channel beginning at noon CT before switching to CBS at 2 p.m. CT.
