Saturday night will bring plenty of familiarity when the Auburn Tigers host the Florida Gators. That dates back to when Alex Golesh was with South Florida and Jon Sumrall led the Tulane program.
Another part of that familiarity is Byrum Brown facing Sumrall at Tulane.
Golesh and Sumrall have met one time prior, in 2024, when Tulane defeated USF, 45-10. In that game, Brown was 12 of 18 for 134 yards and was sacked four times. Unfortunately for Brown, he suffered a fractured fibula in the defeat and missed the remainder of the season.
During his weekly press conference, Sumrall was asked about Brown's development.
"I think he's more polished as a quarterback," Sumrall said this week. "I think he sees the field a little bit better and cleaner. That
comes with experience. That's any quarterback as you're maturing. I think he's a good player."
Some Auburn fans may disagree after the first game when Brown threw three interceptions in the win over Baylor. He cleaned that up in the last game versus Southern Mississippi with zero turnovers. Sumrall also acknowledged his tea will be going up against an experienced quarterback in Brown. He also sees the talent that Brown possesses.
"He's got arm talent to make throws all over the field," added Sumrall. "He's a big guy in stature. He's a physical guy and I think he's just playing with confidence because he's got a lot of time in the system."
In five seasons, Brown has played in 37 games, throwing for 8,175 yards and 63 touchdowns. On the ground, he has rushed for 2,380 yards and 32 touchdowns. In two games this season, he has a total of 600 yards and three touchdowns. Brown will be a key factor in the Tigers picking up a win on Saturday against the Gators.
