Tank Dellisn't the only name expected to return soon for the Houston Texans.
According to reports, the Texans are expected to get reinforcements at safety this week from veteran defensive back M.J. Stewart. According to KPRC 2 Sports' Aaron Wilson, Stewart is expected to be taken off the injured reserve list and added to the active roster ahead of Sunday's game against the Tennessee Titans.
“M.J will be up and ready to go," Texans coachDeMeco Ryans said Wednesday. "He's done a great job the past couple of weeks of practicing. He's looking really good. He's healthy back to himself. He'll be up ready to go this Sunday.”
A former Buccaneers second-round pick, Stewart has best been known for his time in Houston as a special teams ace. Last season,
he was given the first crack to see snaps at safety following the release of defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
While is wasn't elite play, Stewart was consistent in his four starts working opposite of Pro Bowler Calen Bullock. He totaled 25 tackles, two passes defensed and one forced fumble before being carted off with a season-ending quad injury.
After starting the season on the PUP list, Stewart was cleared to begin his 21-day rehab assignment with the Texans ahead of Week 3's matchup against the Indianapolis Colts. Over the past two weeks, he's made progress to eventually go from a limited participant in practice to full.
The Texans could sit him another week before making a move, but they need help next to Bullock. Reed Blankenship, Houston's top defensive free-agent acquisition, has been a liability in coverage over the past three games. His biggest blunder came in Week 2's loss against the Cincinnati Bengals, where he was out of position several times while guarding Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.
For his career, Stewart has recorded 237 tackles, two interceptions, nine tackles for losses 15 pass breakups and a sack.
Kickoff from Nissan Stadium is scheduled for Noon on CBS.
