Kayshon Boutte is ready to show the world that he can be a consistent weapon for any offense as he enters the final year of his rookie contract as a member of the Houston Texans.
Apparently, the Texans are ready to let him fly loose.
Boutte, who was traded ahead of the end of training camp to the Texans from the New England Patriots, seems to have caught on with the offense in a short time to warrant a bigger role in Week 1's matchup against the Buffalo Bills. Some would say that he could end up being the second-most important weapon to the passing game behind Pro Bowler Nico Collins as the team's newest vertical threat.
"He's a smart guy," Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans said on Monday. "He's picked up on what we've asked him to do. There was some
carryover in the things that he's learning, so the speed of transition is definitely there. He's done a great job of being attentive to what we're asking him to do and we're throwing him out there, so let's see."

Acquired for a 2028 seventh-round pick and safety Jaylen Reed, Boutte made the trip to Charlotte for the team's joint practice against the Carolina Panthers, but did not partake in drills or the final preseason game. Instead, he spent his time learning the ins and outs of the playbook under second-year coordinator Nick Caley while trying to pick the brain of C.J. Stroud.
"He's been great so far. The player, I would say, has playmaking ability," Boutte said last week of his relationship with Stroud. "He's able to do anything. I trust that he'll get the ball anywhere on the field and he trusts that we're going to be in the spot whenever he needs us."
The Texans have plans for Boutte, who finished with 33 catches for 551 yards and six touchdowns, but what the role actually becomes is a mystery. With New England, he was one of the league's top vertical threats, averaging nealy 17 yards per catch in the past two seasons.
Houston plans on letting him play loose in the Week 1 battle against former MVP Josh Allen and Buffalo. Right now, there's a battle for the No. 2 receiving threat opposite Collins. Given that the Texans were willing to make a move outside the roster to land a pass-catcher, it's reasonable to assume that Boutte will immediately have the first chance to take over as the second-best option in the passing game.

"We're trying to go win a football game," Ryans said. "We traded for the guy for a reason; I think he's a really good playmaker, so we want to see that show up on Sunday."
