Is this the year the Houston Texans finally claim the title of AFC champions?
Could this be the season that confetti falls in Los Angeles as C.J. Stroud, DeMeco Ryans, Will Anderson Jr. and others hoist the Lombardi Trophy to celebrate their first-ever Super Bowl title?
Fans will find out Sunday, but Texans Wire has looked into the future and see what's in store this fall?
As with every season, bold predictions are a part of the storylines for the 2026 year. The Texans should be built to make a run to the postseason and even host multiple playoff games on paper. They're that talented of a team and have the experience to handle anything thrown their way.
So, what's coming true this season amid a run to the playoffs? Here are our 10 bold predictions
that get increasingly bolder as the picks unfold ahead of Sunday's battle against the Buffalo Bills.
1. Texans lead the NFL in total yards and scoring defense
Somehow, Houston's defense improved this offseason with the additions of Reed Blankenship, Jadeveon Clowney, Logan Hall and rookie Kayden McDonald. Every one of them has a role on the roster that should factor into helping Houston remain a force on early downs under defensive coordinator Matt Burke.
Add in a veteran core with Will Anderson Jr., Danielle Hunter, Azeez Al-Shaair, Kamari Lassiter and Jalen Pitre, and this Texans defense will be elite once again. Last season, Houston led the league in total yards (277.2 yards per game) and ranked second in scoring (17.4 points per game), trailing only the Seattle Seahawks by a .2 differnetial.
Seattle and Denver lost pieces to their defenses this offseason. Houston only got better. It's not far-fetched to envsion Houston breaking records wth this unit in nearly every categoery.
Our predicton:
- Total Yards: 262.3 per game
- Passing Defense: 158.5 yards per game
- Run Defense: 91.2 yards per game
- Scoring Defense: 15.9 points per game
2. C.J. Stroud throws a career-high 33 TDs, gets new deal
The focus now turns to Stroud for all the wrong reasons entering 2026. Not only did his postseason woes keep him from potentially signing a long-term contract, but everyone else was paid this offseason. Add in that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers recently extended quarterback Baker Mayfield on a three-year deal and it's clear that Houston needs Stroud to return closer to his rookie form if they're going to commit $60 million annually.
The good news for Stroud is that this is his second season running the show with offensive coordinator Nick Caley. He should have a better run game, headlined by newcomer David Montgomery. The offensive line should be improved with the additions of rookie Keylan Rutledge and veteran Evan Brown up the interior.
Stroud won't be among the elite passers in the league, but the red zone offense should be more potent. That includes Stroud finding targets like Kayshon Boutte and rookie Marlin Klein in mismatch matchups for easy scores. With that in mind, Stroud finally hits the 30-plus touchdown marker and proves his value as the face of the franchise.
As for that new deal? Let's lock in Stroud for $61 million annually on a four-year deal. That would mark the first non-three year contract for general manager Nick Caserio, but with that production, he's probably content with it.
- Stroud's stat line: 3,983 passing yards, 33 TDs, 10 INTS, 64.7 completion percentage, 97.4 passer rating.
3. Kayshon Boutte leads Texans in receiving touchdowns
Since he arrived, the Texans have been high on Boutte's potential. They need a No. 2 option and a threat to win inside the red zone now with Jayden Higgins out for the year.
Boutte's vertical speed should factor well into Caley's offensive approach, but his physicality makes him a threat near the goal line. Pro Bowler Nico Collins should lead the team in targets, receptions and receiving yards, but defensive coordinators know he'll be the first option in the red zone for Stroud.
This is where Boutte comes into play. He's expected to be Houston's No. 2 option and the difference-maker on the outside next to Collins. It's not uncommon for teams to have a different leading receiver in two categories; just ask the Los Angeles Rams with Puka Nacua and Davante Adams.
Give me nine touchdowns for Boutte. He'll finish with just over 600 yards, but few teams will stop him from inside the 20 from putting up six points.
4. Texans break franchise single-season sack record
Two years ago, the Texans made history behind Anderson and Hunter with 49 sacks, breaking the team's single-season record set back in 2018. Well, now Houston has Hall and Clowney to add to the fun, with the latter coming off a team-leading 8.5 sacks in Dallas last season.
Anderson and Hunter should be locked into at least 10 every year, but let's round up to 16 for Hunter and 13 for Anderson. That's 26 already. Clowney should be anywhere between 6.5 and 11 total and Hall probably falls in the 3.5 to 6 range. Already, if we look at the highs, that's pushing near 40. Al-Shaair should have at least 2-4, while a combination of Sheldon Rankins, Mario Edwards Jr. and McDonald could get to another 8-10.
Let's call it an even 52 on the season as Houston reclaims its division title.
5. Texans clinch No. 1 seed in the AFC
One of top questions this season is not can the Texans get over the hump in the divisional round, but also if they can host a divisional-round game. Even back to the days of Gary Kubiak and Bill O'Brien, Houston never hosted a playoff matchup past the wild-card round.
And the result? Problems for the offense that have led to playing in the cold up north. In all three postseason appearances under DeMeco Ryans, the Texans have played in temperatures below freezing, including twice in snow.
This season feels different, and while it might be bold to say Houston will go on a run to Inglewood, calling the AFC South franchise the best in the AFC isn't crazy. Let's predict them finishing 13-4 with a head-to-head win over the Baltimore Ravens to clinch the No. 1 seed, thus having a bye week and home-field advantage for the divisional round.
6. CB Kamari Lassiter leads NFL in pass breakups
A 2024 second-round pick out of Georgia, there's no chance Lassiter would have landed with the Texans in a redraft. He's become one of the bona fide top-12 cornerbacks, largely because of his role in open-field tackling aganst the run.
But another strength of Lassiter's game is his ability to break up passes in man coverage. Over the past two years, the Pro Bowler has broken up 27 passes, including 17 last season opposite All-Pro Derek Stingley Jr.
Lassiter finished tied for sixth in breakups last fall, but he was only two behind Carolina's Mike Jackson for the league lead. Given that he's a year older and has a better knack at jumping routes, let's round that number up to 20 deflections and give the Texans' star another reason to get paid top dollar this offseason.
7. Blake Fisher becomes Texans best offensive lineman in Year 3
Some players are late bloomers. For Fisher, that might just be the case. While still expected to serve as depth behind second-year starter Aireontae Ersery and veteran Trent Brown, Ryans was very complimentary of Fisher's growth heading into his third year after a promising training camp.
"If I gave out awards, he would get the award for the most improved offensive lineman," Ryans said last month. "From what he did last year, being in that jumbo-type role, he lined up at left tackle every day and he's gotten better every single day. I'm really pleased with Blake. I'm proud of the work that he's put in."
Ersey still needs to prove he can build upon a promising end to his rookie season. Both Brown and Braden Smith have been proven injury-prone options, so seeing either player miss extended time wouldn't come as a shock. Fisher could end up going from being the last name to make the squad to perhaps the best linemen on the roster.
It's a bold take, but it's not impossible to think it'll happen.
8. Tank Dell does not play in 2026
Dell can't return until at least early October after being placed on the injured reserve list. Even if he's cleared to return to practice, that doesn't mean he'll be on the field for a battle against the Tennessee Titans. There's a 21-day window where Houston could determine if he'll be cleared to go or if he'll be placed back on the IR for good.
For now, I lean toward the latter.
Dell hasn't taken a hit or put on pads in over two years. He hasn't learned how to fit into Caley's offensive scheme and Houston has potentially seven receivers who could carve out real playing time and are healthy. And if Houston is in a run toward the top seed, it's more common for the franchise to go out and bring in a healthier option at the deadline rather than bank on the former speedster being near 100 percent.
Again, this is a bold prediction list that becomes increasingly unlikely with each step. Caserio said he’s getting close, and the expectation is that he’ll return at some point this season, but we've heard stuff like that in the past. Until he's taking hits during games, I can't buy into him being back.
9. Texans lose in the AFC Championship to Buffalo
Houston's seasons begins with a battle against Buffalo to advance to 1-0.
It also ends with Buffalo to make it to the Super Bowl.
There are countless truths surrounding this team entering Year 4 of the Ryans' era. Yes, it's the best roster Ryans has had since taking over in 2023. Yes, it's good enough to get them home-field advantage and avoid the frigid temperatures of Kansas City, Buffalo, Cincinnati, or Baltimore.
And yes, Stroud should improve, leaving few questions about the result this fall regarding the team's chances of actually making a run to the Super Bowl. But, Allen has been on the other side of this battle in the past against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. He's won the last five matchups against Mahomes and Kansas City in the regular season, only to watch that same roster best him in the playoffs.
This has to be the year for Buffalo. It has to. Allen's prime is soon set to fade and someone has to take on the mantle of the team to beat them in the AFC. Beating a team twice in the same season is challenging. Beating a quarterback like Allen twice is nearly impossible.
Houston finally makes it to the title game, but the journey stops here.
10. Danielle Hunter, not Will Anderson Jr., wins Defensive Player of the Year after breaking J.J. Watt's franchise record
It's the final bold prediction, so swing big, right?
Everyone focuses on Anderson and his ability to affect the play, even if he's not making the highlight hit. Last season, the former No. 3 overall pick finished second in DPOY voting behind Myles Garrett and was the only contender for the award.
But what if affecting the play eventually opens up more chances for Hunter to close the deal? It's not like he's a secondary defensive end who is benefiting from playing with an All-Pro. Hunter has been one of the league's most consistent forces in pass rushing, already surpassing the 100 career mark before he turned 31. He's fifth among active pass-rushers in all-time sacks because of his consistency of totaling at least 12 or more.
So, go big or go home. This is the year when he finally cements his status as a future Hall of Famer. How so? Simple: He takes Watt's record of 20.5 and becomes the all-time single-season leader down in H-Town. If that happens, best believe that Hunter would be in the running for the NFL's highest defensive honor.
Hunter is like He-Man, sent on a mission to destroy Skelator, or in this case, any quarterback not named Stroud. The only thing standing in his way would be Anderson, but he looks like he's arrived from a different universe; voters would have to give him his due as the team's top defender.
It just feels like eventually, Hunter will have that one season where he is the face of the franchise. Why not in 2026?
