TheHouston Texans started the first two games with 16 penalties for 189 yards.
Then in their Week 3 game against the Indianapolis Colts, they only had two penalties. It seemed like maybe they turned a corner with regard to penalties, but then they had another two weeks with a lot of penalties.
In their Week 4 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, Houston had 13 penalties for 90 yards. They also had too many penalties in Week 5 in their first win of the season against the Tennessee Titans; the Texans had 11 penalties for 95 yards.
Head coach DeMeco Ryans expressed his frustration with Houston’s continuing issues with penalties after five weeks.
"We have to get the penalties cleaned up. It's not good enough at all for us. We take a touchdown off the board from
a holding penalty,” Ryans said. “Multiple times we're making ourselves start further back than we would like to because these are things that we can control from a penalty standpoint. We have to find a way to get it cleaned up. You have to play with better technique and that's the part that's disappointing. We can't hold guys. You have to play clean. You have to play with the proper technique. You have to finish the right way. If we want to continue to progress as a team, we have to clean up the penalties. You can't hurt yourself."
After finally getting their first win of the season, the Texans travel to London to attempt to get their second win of the year against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Both teams are highly penalized, as they are both averaging over eight penalties per game. This is certainly a winnable game for Houston, and they also have a new weapon in wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr, who is expected to make his Texans debut in the Jaguars’ game.
Kickoff from Wembley Stadium is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on NFL Network.
