Hansen, an undrafted free agent out of Illinois, has been part of the Texans for the last four years after reuniting with former Illinois coach Lovie Smith. Mostly seeing his impact felt on special teams,
Hansen has been a reliable depth piece at linebacker, totaling over 80 career tackles. Last season, he recorded 19 tackles.
The Texans are already down one linebacker with E.J. Speed on the PUP list to begin the year. Hansen wasn't expected to compete for a starting job, but his veteranship and knowledge of the defense should have given him a nod over other options like rookie Aidan Fisher or fellow special teams standout Jake Hummel.
Houston returns to practice on Friday before its first official practice in front of the public on Saturday morning.
