The Houston Texans have a date with Joey Porter Jr. on Sunday at Relaint Stadium.
According to multiple reports, Porter, who was traded to the Dallas Cowboys late Tuesday night, is expected to make his debut Sunday against the Texans. Porter was dealing with a back injury while with the Steelers, but he also was negotiating a long-term deal with the franchise entering the regular season.
During an interview on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said they believe the former second-round pick would get "some snaps" in Week 4 after practicing the past two days.
"We're just trying to take things day by day, and if everything looks good, then we should be out there," Porter said following his first Cowboys practice
on Thursday, per ESPN's Todd Archer.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer told reporters that they also believed that with a strong week of practice, Porter could be cleared to play in some capacity.
"We'd like him to play, but we'll see how the week goes. I think he's excited about the opportunity to maybe play, but we'll see how the rest of the week goes. But it was a good start today," Schottenheimer said.
A three-year starter for the Steelers, Porter totaled 165 tackles (120 solo), 31 pass breakups and three interceptions over 47 games. According to Pro Football Reference, opposing quarterbacks finished with a 57.2 QB rating when targeting Porter's side of the field.
Dallas, who enters Sunday 1-2, needs cornerback help in a depleted and injured secondary. Cobie Durant is out against the Texans after dealing with a hamstring injury. Meanwhile, starting cornerback Shavon Revel, who injured his knee last week, was limited in Wednesday's practice but is expected to play.
The Texans are familiar with Porter from the postseason. Last January, Nico Collins and Porter metin the AFC Wild Card Round, where the Pro Bowl receiver was limited to three catches on seven targets for 21 yards. This all happened before Collins left with a concussion midway through the game.
Kickoff is scheduled for Noon CT on FOX. With a loss, Houston will look to become the first team since the 1992 San Diego Chargers to go from a 0-4 start to securing a playoff berth.
