When evaluating the Buffalo Bills' offense, many people focus on quarterback Josh Allen, running back James Cook, and wide receiver DJ Moore, whom they acquired in March.
However, Houston Texansdefensive coordinator Matt Burke is also looking at how to attack their offensive line in the season opener against the Bills on Sunday.
“Very cohesive unit and with Josh obviously in conjunction with that in terms of like setting protections and how they're doing it,” Burke said. “Whether there's some changes or not, I don't know, but you just see they're always on what they're doing. I know we had a little bit of success last year from a rush standpoint, but it's not because they're busting things or anything like that. They're a very cohesive unit. They know what they want
to do. They're really good in the run game. Part of Cook's success last year is because that offensive line is really good, particularly in the run game. It's another big challenge for us. It sure is.”
Buffalo’s offense features a mix of veterans such as five-time Pro-Bowler Dion Dawkins at left tackle and Pro Bowler Connor McGovern at center, along with Alec Anderson at left guard going in Year 3.
This unit was one of the best pass blockers in the league last season and was also a critical part of Buffalo’s run game.
Houston’s defense will need to disrupt this cohesive offensive line unit if they are going to defeat the Bills in the season opener. The Texans started last season in a 0-3 hole trying to make the playoffs and while they were able to get to the postseason last year, they would like to avoid a slow start to aid in their journey to the postseason this year.
Kickoff is scheduled for Noon CT.
