Tank Dell isn't the only player close to returning for theHouston Texans.
On Monday, Texans coach DeMeco Ryans announced that the team would open the 21-day window for offensive tackle Braden Smith and rookie defensive tackle Kayden McDonald. While Smith would be a welcome addition, McDonald could be a much-needed asset to Houston's defensive line on pass-rushing plays after a woeful 0-4 start.
During Wednesday's open practice sessions with the media, McDonald was listed as a limited participant. Thursday's practice should provide more insight on whether he plays on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium.
“Kayden as well is good, get him back out there, get him some reps, get him back going," Ryans said Wednesday. "We'll see how
he continues to progress as well.
"All three guys, it's first day back. It's good to see them out there. Now we'll see how that looks for each guy. Each guy's on their own plan, however quickly they progress. We'll see how we can get them back to the roster and so they can help us.”
McDonald was a fan-favorite pick when added in the second round by the Texans in last April's draft. An All-American at Ohio State, McDonald was expected to be a massive part of the Texans' rotational defensive line in 2026.
Last season, under the direction of former Patriots defensive coordinator and Detriot Lions head coach Matt Patricia, he emerged as one of the best defensive tackles in the country with 65 total tackles, nine tackles for loss, three sacks and two forced fumbles. Some believed he was the best defensive tackle prospect in the draft and should have been in consideration for Houston's first-round pick at No. 28.
Following the end of the preseason, McDonald suffered an ankle injury during practice and was seen wearing a boot over his right foot. McDonald's injury was not expected to be season-ending, but he still placed on the injured reserve and given four weeks to recover.
"I think he's gotten to see the seriousness of this business and what it takes to be a great in this league," All-Pro defensive end Will Anderson Jr. said of McDonald. "I also think it showed him how to take care of his body, how to get his mind right and all those different type of things. I'm really proud of him. I'm glad he's back on the field with us. I know his mind is right and we need him."
Right now, the Texans' run defense has been the best part of Houston's defensive unit. Teams are averaging less than 90 yards per contest, but the pass-rush pressure rate is down across the middle. McDonald's ability to take on double teams and open running lanes for delayed blitzes could help finish drives with punts on third down.
"We need him," Anderson said. "We need him to step up big time and I know he's got it in him to help us get these wins."
