Throughout training camp and the preseason, Houston Texans rookietight end Marlin Klein has made an impression on all the members of the coaching staff, including second-year offensive coordinator Nick Caley.
Klein still has a lot to learn coming from college to the NFL, but there are some good veterans in that group who can help him, including starter Dalton Schultz.
“I think just learning a different language, learning a different offense," Caley said Thursday. “At Michigan, I would say he had a lot on his plate relative to some of the things, especially in the run game what he would do. I just think the details of things overall and being able to process those. He’s got a really good room of veterans. [Tight Ends coach] James [Ferentz] does
a really good job with those guys, to look at and model the way for those guys. Just acclimating himself to our system in the spring and then being able to build off that and getting exposure as we progress through training camp. He's gotten better every step of the way.”
Klein’s best year in college as a receiver was last season when he had 248 yards and a touchdown. However, he was considered the best blocking tight end in the draft and will probably serve more in that role going into this season, especially as the No. 3 tight end on the depth chart behind Schultz and Foster Moreau who is going into his eighth season in the league.
