The Houston Texans could only keep so many running backs on their 53-man roster.
But this release was surprising, even for those who thought it could be possible.
According to reports, the Texans have waived rookie running back Noah Whittington. Right now, Houston plans to bring him back on the practice squad if he clears the waiver wire on Monday.

Whittington was one of the standouts among Houston’s undrafted rookie class in training camp. He demonstrated impressive vision and acceleration as well as being one of the most consistent
players in camp. During the preseason, he appeared not only as a running back but also on special teams as a kick returner.
Part of what probably helped Whittington excel in training camp and the preseason is his six years of collegiate experience. Whittington was part of the COVID class of collegiate athletes, starting his college journey with Western Kentucky in 2020; that is what allowed him to have an extra full season before going into the NFL.
After spending two seasons with Western Kentucky, Whittington spent his final four years of college with Oregon where he consistently put up solid rushing numbers.
In all, he finished his career with nearly 3,000 rushing yards and 21 rushing touchdowns.
With Whittington not making the 53-man roster, Houston will carry four running backs. Starter David Montgomery, last year’s starter and current backup Woody Marks, were never in jeopardy of losing their jobs, but then there's third-stringer Jawhar Jordan, who played in a few games, and special teams standout British Brooks, who saw some action early last fall.
The Texans open the season at home on Sept. 13 against the Buffalo Bills.
