Jadeveon Clowneyis back where it all began.
According to reports, the Houston Texans and the 2014 No. 1 overall pick have agreed to terms on a one-year deal. Clowney, 33, returns to the place where he became a staple as a pass-rushing icon during the 2010s under then-coach Bill O'Brien.
Once thought of as the best up-and-coming defensive end, Clowney spent five seasons in Houston opposite three-timeDefensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt, helping the Texans reach the playoffs three times. Since his departure in 2019, Clowney has spent time with the Seattle Seahawks, Baltimore Ravens, Tennessee Titans, Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns and Dallas Cowboys.
A three-time Pro Bowler in Houston, Clowney rekindled his spark last season as a member of
the Cowboys' pass rush, totaling a team-leading 8.5 sacks. He also added 10 quarterback hits and 12 tackles for loss.
Reunion: The #Texans are signing their own former No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney, per me and @MikeGarafolo.

Clowney, who played last year for the #Cowboys, stays in his hometown to play. A quick photoshop: pic.twitter.com/ACZYDLQZgH
The Texans aren't looking for a starter. They have that in Will Anderson Jr. and four-time Pro Bowler Danielle Hunter. But with Derek Barnett's absence in the No. 3 defensive end role, a conversation could be had with Clowney's camp as a rotational third-down option who can add value in the run defense while perhaps upgrading the pass-rushing department.
Although he never lived up to becoming a generational pass-rusher, Clowney was consistent opposite Watt. Over his five seasons with the Texans, Clowney totaled career-highs in tackles (206), tackles for loss (64), sacks (29) and QB hits (67).
Texans fans are elated to see the news of a reunion of Clowney with the AFC South franchise. Here was the reaction on social media.
Clowney was incredibly underrated in Houston because he didn’t rack up many sacks yet made a huge impact on film as a versatile chess piece, spinner and run defender. Feels like he can be used in essentially the same way on this Texans defense. https://t.co/ALvvDuJ5iV

Jadeveon Clowney had 8.5 sacks and 12 TFLs in 13 games last year. The #Colts will now face him twice this season (along with Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter, of course). https://t.co/WEeDhaHWYb

Jadeveon Clowney once trash talked my Mom after the Seahawks beat her Eagles in the playoffs. “Bye, Eagles Bye!” Incredible pull by @dannyoneil. 😂

Jadeveon Clowney has spent the last 2 seasons on the worst defenses in the NFL.

2024 - Panthers (32nd in EPA/Play)
2025 - Cowboys (32nd in EPA/Play)
He led both of those edge groups in pressures & sacks.

Jadeveon Clowney’s career was supposed to be over as a rookie when he needed microfracture surgery and at least 2 more operations on his knee. He enters his 13th season after being drafted first overall in 2014.

The defense just keeps getting deeper
It’s third down. You couldn’t run the ball on 1st or 2nd against this stout Texans Front Seven.

You now have to protect your QB against…

Great move by Nick Caserio to bring back Jadevon Clowney for depth at DE. JD had 8.5 sacks for Cowboys last season. He’s always been better at stopping the run than rising the passer. He’ll love playing for DeMeco Ryans as opposed to Bill O’Brien, who traded him to Seattle.
