There were such high hopes for the Houston Texans after last season. They tended to put on a show for the home crowd, finishing the regular season in 2025 with a 7-2 record.
However, after seven games this season, they are 0-4 in home games.
"It's not where we want to be. Right now being 0-4 at home is not how we expected it to be,” Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans said. “We want to give our fans better and we have to find a way to turn that around."
Houston’s two wins so far this season both came on the road. The first was in Nashville against the then-winless Tennessee Titans. A week later in London as part of the international schedule, Houston bested the Jacksonville Jaguars with a walk-off field goal from Ka'imi Fairbairn.
Three of Houston's
four home games have been one-score games, including its overtime loss against the New York Giants on Sunday afternoon. In those three matchups, the offense was able to tie the game or take the lead in the fourth quarter, but the defense squandered an opportunity to close the door.
With how this season has started, there are a lot of questions the Texans need to answer. The defense is significantly worse than it was last season, despite having a lot of the same players.
Houston continues to struggle with penalties that stall drives. Its run game is still inefficient no matter who the running back is and might not improve until after the return of David Montgomery.
Perhaps the most disappointing thing about this season is how quarterback C.J. Stroud has played. Stroud has actually played quite well. Entering the bye week, he's on track to finish this year with far more passing yards and touchdowns than last season, along with fewer interceptions.
The pieces around Stroud, however, are not helping him, essentially wasting a season from their franchise quarterback, who still has yet to be rewarded with a new extension.
The Texans come back from their bye week to face the Los Angeles Chargers, who currently do not have a win despite making the playoffs as the No. 7 seed last year.
However, the Texans will not get the chance to have their first home win until Week 11 against the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday Night Football.
