Former Wisconsin Badgers men’s hockey defenseman Ryan Suter is headed to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.
Suter, a Madison native, was announced as part of the Hall of Fame’s 2026 class on Sept. 10. He will officially be inducted on Nov. 30 in Washington, D.C., joining Phil Kessel, Amanda Kessel, T.J. Oshie and Stan Wong in this year’s class.
The honor adds another major accomplishment to an impressive career for Suter, who played 1,526 regular-season NHL games over 20 seasons. That total ranks second all-time among American-born players. He also represented the United States extensively on the international stage, including helping Team USA win its first-ever World Junior Championship gold medal in 2004 and earning a silver medal at the 2010 Olympics.
Before becoming a longtime NHL defenseman, Suter spent one season with the Badgers during the 2003-04 season. He earned All-WCHA Third Team and WCHA All-Rookie Team honors before being selected seventh overall by the Nashville Predators in the 2003 NHL Draft.
Suter will also become the third member of his family inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame. His father, Bob Suter, was inducted in 2003 as a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team, while uncle Gary Suter was inducted as an individual in 2011.
The latest honor adds Suter to a long list of Badgers who have reached the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame, further highlighting Wisconsin’s impact on American hockey.
