Luke Loucks used his appearance at ACC Tipoff on Wednesday to reflect on his first season as Florida State’s head coach, outline the program’s expectations, and explain why he believes the Seminoles are better positioned entering Year 2.
Loucks opened by discussing what it means to lead his alma mater, where he played, won an ACC championship and met his wife. He also reiterated his belief that Florida State belongs among the ACC’s top programs.
Florida State won 10 of its final 12 regular-season games last year after a difficult start, but Loucks said the program still fell short of his two primary goals: winning the ACC and reaching the NCAA Tournament.
“Every year I’m the coach I want to win the ACC,” Loucks said. “I know what it feels like
to win the ACC at Florida State.”
He acknowledged making mistakes as a first-year college head coach, though he believes those experiences helped establish a stronger foundation for the future.
More resources changed FSU’s roster-building approach
Loucks was especially candid about where Florida State stood financially last season.
“I think we were dead last in the ACC and dead last in Power 5 basketball last season,” Loucks said.
He added that increased resources helped FSU land more proven players such as Anthony Robinson and Sebastian Rancik rather than relying as heavily on transfers moving up from lower levels.
Efficiency and possessions will define FSU’s approach
When asked what separates winning teams, Loucks simplified his philosophy to two areas.
“There’s only two things, and it’s efficiency and possessions,” he said.
For FSU, that means protecting the ball, creating extra opportunities through offensive rebounding and forcing turnovers while generating efficient shots at the rim, free-throw line and off kick-out threes.
Loucks’ message was consistent throughout: Florida State does not intend to settle for the middle of the ACC.
“We came here to win,” Loucks said, “and we are all-in on getting Florida State back to being a top-tier, winning program.”
