Link Jarrett and FSU baseball have had plenty of success in the transfer portal since he took over the Seminoles. They have found diamonds in the rough on both the mound and at the plate, but they have also won battles for some of the most coveted players in the portal.
They hope they did a bit of both this offseason, adding nine players through the portal as they prepare for the 2027 season. With the entire starting rotation taken in the 2026 MLB Draft, starting pitching was one of their biggest needs, and they prioritized Cayden Suchy, who is coming off a breakout sophomore season with the UConn Huskies.
D1Baseball ranked the lefty as the No. 1 pitcher in the transfer portal, and Aaron Fitt believes he will contend for some hardware in Tallahassee.
He was the most proven ace in the transfer portal this summer, coming off a 2.82 ERA and a sterling 105-23 K-BB mark. Suchy really butters his bread with his outstanding feel to spin two distinct breaking balls: a high-70s curveball and a slider around 82, but he also features a very good changeup and an effective fastball that plays above its low-90s velocity. Look for him to vie for ACC Pitcher of the Year honors next year at Florida State.
Suchy was the Big East Pitcher of the Year in 2026. He served as UConn's ace throughout the season, making 14 starts and logging 82 1/3 innings, including one complete game. His consistency at the front of the Huskies' rotation made him one of the most sought-after arms to enter the transfer portal and a contender to be FSU's new Friday night starter.
The 6-foot, 192-pounder pitched 6.0 or more innings in 10 of his starts, throwing one complete game. He has some experience against power conference opponents, making starts against the Kansas State Wildcats and Arizona Wildcats last season.
While UConn lost both games, Suchy was not the reason why. He pitched 6.0 innings against Kansas State, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk, striking out nine. He pitched 6.2 innings against Arizona, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks, striking out five.
