The Florida State Seminoles fired head coach Mike Norvell on Nov. 1, 2026, after a 3-5 start to the 2026 football season. This follows a brutal 36-24 loss in which FSU couldn't capitalize defensively against a terrible Clemson offense.
The Seminoles opted to go in a different direction, and they have appointed former FSU quarterback Rick Stockstill to be the interim head coach, the school announced.
Stockstill previously served as Florida State's director of scouting for offense starting in 2024; before that, he was the head coach at Middle Tennessee State for 18 seasons. He led the Blue Raiders to a 113–111 record, including a Sun Belt co-championship (2006), a Conference USA East Division title (2018), and a historic upset win over a ranked
Miami Hurricanes team in 2022.
Stockstill played at Florida State from 1977-81 and led the Seminoles to a 10-2 record in 1980. He defeated No. 3 Nebraska and followed it up the next week with a victory over No. 3 Pittsburgh. He is fifth in total touchdowns all-time for the Seminoles. He was inducted into the FSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2019.
Florida State will look to right the ship on Saturday at Boston College on Nov. 7. They have not won a road game since 2023.
