The Florida State Seminoles are wrapping up fall camp this week ahead of their Week Zero matchup with the New Mexico State Aggies on Aug. 29 in Doak Campbell Stadium.
While he acknowledged that losing defensive back Karson Hobbs for the season is a major blow, head coach Mike Norvell is pleased with the overall health of the team.
"Losing Karson was a big hit for us," he said. "I was really excited about what I was expecting from him this year.
"As a whole, I feel good about where we are," he added. "Still a couple things that we'll see as we get in throughout the course this weekend, but I feel good overall."
He mentioned linebacker Mikai Gbayor and wide receiver Jayvan Boggs as two players who returned quicker than expected and are poised to be
key contributors.
"Mikai Gbayor and Jayvan Boggs, those guys are getting back, I truly was anticipating that being a game week decision in Week One," Norvell said. "But I think both of those guys have shown that they're going to be fully ready to go. They got cleared to be able to participate. It's been good seeing that push. So getting two guys we expect to be major contributors for us, getting them back a couple weeks early is a great job by our athletic training staff and by those guys in their rehab."
Cornerback Nehemiah Chandler is another player battling for a starting spot that is back playing after being limited earlier in camp.
"He's definitely gonna help this football team this year," Norvell said. "He was a little limited for the last week, and he's just back into full practice yesterday, but I mean he's shown the ability."
Running back Quentrevion Wisner is part of a deep running back room and has been limited, but Norvell is not worried about the veteran.
"He was able to get back in practice here this week," he said. "Feel confident about what that will look like this next week."
Norvell also confirmed that André Otto, who is in the mix to be a starter at right guard, was back practicing.
