Florida State football's legendary run through the 1990s continues to receive national recognition more than three decades later. As part of its SN 140 series celebrating the publication's 140th anniversary, The Sporting News unveiled its 1990s College Football All-America Team, and two Seminoles earned spots among the decade's greatest players.
Former FSU star Marvin Jones was selected at linebacker, while Sebastian Janikowski was the team's kicker, highlighting two of the defining stars from one of the most successful eras in Florida State's history.
Jones anchored Bobby Bowden's defense during the early 1990s and remains one of the most decorated linebackers in program history. A consensus All-American in 1992 and the winner of the Dick Butkus
Award as the nation's top linebacker, Jones helped lead the Seminoles to consecutive top-five finishes before becoming the fourth overall selection in the 1993 NFL Draft. His combination of speed, physicality and leadership made him one of the premier defensive players of the decade.
Janikowski's inclusion comes as little surprise after redefining what was possible from the kicking position during his time in Tallahassee. The powerful left-footer won the Lou Groza Award in both 1998 and 1999, becoming the first player to capture the honor twice. He also played a pivotal role in helping Florida State claim the 1999 national championship before making history as the 17th overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft, the highest a kicker had been selected in decades.
Jones and Janikowski were among a star-studded group recognized by The Sporting News. The 1990s All-America Team also featured Hall of Famers and college football icons including quarterback Peyton Manning, running back Ricky Williams, offensive tackle Orlando Pace, defensive lineman Warren Sapp, linebacker Ray Lewis and defensive back Charles Woodson.
While Florida State has produced countless All-Americans across its storied history, the inclusion of Jones and Janikowski on an all-decade team spanning the entire 1990s serves as another reminder of the elite talent that fueled one of the greatest stretches in program history. Even decades later, the Seminoles' impact on college football during that era continues to stand among the sport's gold standard.
