Luke Loucks did not recruit Shon Abaev to Florida State by telling him what he wanted to hear.
During an appearance on the Sleepers Media College Basketball podcast, Loucks detailed the unusually direct conversations that helped bring the former Cincinnati Bearcats wing to Tallahassee. Abaev arrived at FSU with obvious pedigree as he had been a consensus top-30 prospect and McDonald’s All-American, but his freshman season with the Bearcats looked much different.
Abaev averaged 7.0 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 24 appearances at Cincinnati while shooting 33.5% from the field and 25.7% from 3-point range. Loucks was straightforward about what he saw.
“Your efficiency is abysmal,” Loucks recalled telling Abaev. “Your shot selection is terrible.
You don’t guard anyone. You don’t rebound.”
Loucks went back through Abaev’s high school film because he believed the player Cincinnati showed was not the same one who had attracted offers from programs across the country. Abaev received 26 scholarship offers before college and became one of Cincinnati’s highest-rated recruits of the modern recruiting era.
“We know what you’re capable of,” Loucks said. “Now we’ve got to get from the capability side to actually producing.”
The approach also reflects how dramatically FSU’s roster-building circumstances have changed. Loucks said Florida State operated with the smallest roster budget he could identify among Power Five and Big East programs during his first season, making it difficult to compete financially for size and proven high-major players.
“Big guys cost a lot of money,” Loucks said on the podcast. “And we certainly did not have a lot of money.”
Those constraints forced Florida State to find value in development and projection. This offseason, with improved resources and a full recruiting cycle, Loucks and his staff were able to assemble a transfer class that included Abaev alongside Kam Taylor, Anthony Robinson II, and Sebastian Rancik. Florida State’s transfer group was ranked among the strongest in the country.
Loucks’ recruiting pitch was essentially a challenge: become more efficient, defend, rebound and turn potential into winning basketball. That message fits the coach delivering it.
“I haven’t ever made a tournament as a coach,” Loucks said. “We’re all hungry in this together.”
