Florida State's dominant performance against Virginia did more than give the Seminoles a much-needed conference victory.
It also significantly improved their standing in ESPN's latest Football Power Index (FPI) rankings. After entering Saturday's matchup ranked No. 45 nationally, Florida State jumped 15 spots to No. 30 following its convincing 38-7 victory over the Cavaliers.
The Seminoles also climbed from ninth to third among ACC programs, marking a considerable turnaround after their early-season struggles. The movement comes after Mike Norvell's squad delivered its most complete performance of the season, scoring 38 unanswered points after falling behind 7-0 in the opening quarter.
Quarterback Ashton Daniels led the offensive push with five
rushing touchdowns, setting a Florida State single-game record, while the Seminoles' defense recorded 10 sacks and limited Virginia to just 205 total yards.
ESPN's FPI is a predictive rating system designed to measure team strength rather than simply reward wins and losses. The model evaluates teams based on their projected performance against an average FBS opponent on a neutral field, incorporating offensive, defensive, and special teams efficiency into its calculations.
Unlike traditional rankings, which are often influenced by a team's overall record and perception among voters, FPI attempts to forecast how teams will perform moving forward.
That distinction makes Florida State's latest movement particularly noteworthy. Despite entering the weekend with a 2-2 record and questions surrounding Norvell's future, the Seminoles demonstrated the potential to compete at a much higher level than their previous results suggested.
Florida State accumulated 464 yards of total offense, including 281 on the ground, while holding Virginia to just 37 rushing yards. The Seminoles also recorded 12 tackles for loss and kept the Cavaliers scoreless on 12 of their 13 possessions. The improvement is especially notable considering Florida State opened the season at No. 28 in ESPN's preseason FPI before sliding following consecutive losses to SMU and Alabama.
Since then, the Seminoles have responded with back-to-back victories over Central Arkansas and Virginia, outscoring those opponents by a combined 72-14.
However, the most difficult portion of Florida State's schedule is far from over. The Seminoles travel to Louisville on Friday, Oct. 9, before visiting Miami on Oct. 17. Florida State also has upcoming conference matchups against Clemson, Boston College, Pittsburgh, and NC State.
