Florida State’s trip to play the Alabama Crimson Tide delivered one of the biggest television audiences of Week 3. The Seminoles’ 50-36 loss averaged 7 million viewers on ABC and peaked at 8 million, according to ESPN PR and Nielsen Big Data + Panel figures released Monday. ESPN labeled the matchup the top afternoon game of Week 3.
The audience also made Florida State-Alabama the second-most-watched ESPN/ABC game of the week, trailing only LSU-Ole Miss, which averaged 10.9 million viewers and peaked at 13.7 million.
ESPN’s Week 3 graphic showed Kentucky-Texas A&M next at 5.4 million average viewers, followed by Georgia-Arkansas at 4.2 million and North Carolina-Clemson at 3.6 million. ESPN networks accounted for 66% of the total college football
viewing share during the week and won every Saturday viewing window, according to the network.
Florida State-Alabama was positioned prominently on ABC before kickoff, with the matchup occupying the network’s 3:30 p.m. ET SEC window. Sean McDonough, Greg McElroy and Katie George were assigned to the broadcast.
Last season’s meeting in Tallahassee averaged 10.7 million viewers and peaked at 12.9 million, making it the most-watched Week 1 mid-afternoon game on record at the time. Florida State won that matchup 31-17 before Alabama answered with a 50-36 victory in Tuscaloosa this season.
Even with FSU entering the game at 1-1 and coming off a loss to SMU, the rematch still drew one of the largest audiences on ESPN’s Week 3 slate.
