The Florida State Seminoles had plenty of chances to beat the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday night, but they ultimately fell short 43-35 in double overtime. It gave FSU their second consecutive loss and dropped them to 3-4 on the season.
With this defeat, albeit a close one, the hot seat for Florida State head coach Mike Norvell didn't exactly get any cooler. However, according to Pete Nakos of On3, a coaching change for the Seminoles at the moment isn't likely to happen.
Entering Saturday night, sources close to the program told On3 that a lopsided loss at Miami could put some serious pressure on the administration to make a midseason move on Mike Norvell. The Seminoles ultimately lost the rivalry game to Miami, but they took the top-five team
to double overtime and lost on a Hail Mary attempt that went under heavy review. The first Hail Mary attempt was good but was called back for offensive holding.
After such a tight loss to a top-five team, it’s unlikely Florida State makes any decisions on Norvell at midseason. The roster is clearly behind him. But the loss does drop Norvell to 3-4 on the season, and he is now 4-16 in his last 20 ACC games. The Seminoles have not won a road ACC game in three seasons. Florida State is on the bye this week before hosting Clemson on Halloween. Defensive coordinator Tony White has faced pressure in recent weeks; his defense allowed 583 total yards. FSU ranks No. 129 in the nation in total defense.
It was reported on Friday that a lopsided loss by FSU against Miami might have led to the program moving on from Norvell. Apparently, this narrow loss to the Hurricanes bought him a little more time, but the Seminoles have to finish the season strong.
Florida State has a bye week before host the Clemson Tigers on Halloween. Back-to-back road games against the Boston College Eagles and Pittsburgh Panthers will follow before ending the year at home versus the NC State Wolfpack and Florida Gators. In order to make a bowl game, FSU needs at least three wins in their last five games.
Even if that were to happen, the future of Norvell is still very murky, and winning six or seven games should change that. With a month and a half left in the season, he must find a way to get the Seminoles to play good football if he wants to continue being the coach at Florida State.
