Mike Norvell is on the biggest hot seat in college football, and it reached scorching temperatures on Saturday night. The Florida State Seminoles suffered their third straight loss on the season to the Clemson Tigers which dropped them to 3-5 on the season.
As things sit, FSU is in serious danger of having a third consecutive losing season under Norvell, which would be his fifth in seven seasons with the program. Also, they're in jeopardy of missing a bowl game for the third year in a row. Simply put, something has to give when it comes to Norvell and the future of Florida State football.
Pete Nakos of On3 reported the latest update on Norvell's status in Tallahassee on Sunday morning. It appears that talks in the building are ramping up about
moving in a different direction.
Sources have told On3 that serious conversations are underway Sunday morning at Florida State about Norvell’s future. Entering the Miami game earlier in October, sources signaled that a lopsided road loss to the rival could be enough to fire Norvell. But the Seminoles played the Hurricanes tight and entered the bye week with two weeks to prep for Clemson.
The loss to Clemson on Saturday night only puts more pressure on the program to make a head coaching change. Doak Campbell Stadium was nearly empty midway through the fourth quarter, when the Seminoles tried to mount a comeback but fell short.
Norvell has failed miserably when it comes to living up to the standard at FSU. His team is now 4-17 in the ACC since the 2023 campaign, and they have an overall record of 10-22 over that span. It's been an embarrassing stretch for the program, and Florida State can't continue to go down this road.
It's no secret that Norvell is regarded as a very nice guy with incredible energy and someone who truly cares about his players on and off the field. As great as that is, he's paid to win football games, and the Seminoles haven't been doing that at a high enough clip for far too long now.
This situation needs to be rectified, and it needs to happen immediately. If not, FSU will go forward as a laughing stock in the state of Florida and college football as a whole.
