It was closer than anyone expected, but the FSU Seminoles still lost to the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday, losing 43-35 in double overtime in controversial fashion. It was arguably their best performance of the season and the best they have looked on the road in quite some time, but it still was not good enough, to the disappointment of their fans.
The Seminoles have now lost their last 12 road games under head coach Mike Norvell, falling to 3-4 this season as they enter their bye week. With FSU entering the game as heavy underdogs, there was plenty of speculation that another bad loss could cause FSU to move on from Norvell, despite his massive buyout.
According to Dan Rorabaugh of USA TODAY Sports, his buyout is $47.7 million if he is fired before
Dec. 1, 2026. That would be the third-biggest in college football history, behind only the $76.8 million the Texas A&M Aggies paid Fisher and the $54 million the LSU Tigers paid Brian Kelly. The Seminoles paid Willie Taggart $18 million when they fired him during the 2019 season, which led to them hiring Norvell ahead of the 2020 season.
While FSU played well against Miami, Norvell is now 41-38 overall and 23-29 in ACC games in his seven-plus seasons as FSU's lead coach. The Seminoles have finished with a losing record in five of those seasons, with them needing to go 4-1 in their final five games to avoid doing so yet again.
