The FSU Seminoles are in the early stages of their head coaching search, and one former coach has taken the chance to express interest in the opening. Brian Kelly recently appeared on the College Sports Radio on Sirius XM show and spoke about the opening.
“Yeah, I mean, look, when you’re talking to an unemployed football coach, every job’s a great job, you know? But Florida State, look, I’ve got a great history with Florida State, great games,” Kelly said, according to On3's Nick Kosko. “I know what that’s like, the history and tradition of Florida State, playing in that state, and the fan base.
“So anytime you have an incredibly brand driven, great tradition and history, there’s a want and desire to be part of somebody that has had that success
and, certainly, leading that program, from anyone’s perspective, would be an honor and privilege.”
While FSU is expected to hire a proven head coach, it seems unlikely that Kelly is a serious candidate. He had a successful tenure leading the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, but failed as the head coach of the LSU Tigers, going 34-14 and getting fired during the 2025 season, his fourth leading the program.
Kelly does have plenty of experience competeting against FSU, going 0-2 against them at LSU and 1-3 at Notre Dame. He is 297-109-2 as a head coach, also making stops with the Grand Valley State Lakers, Central Michigan Chippewas, and Cincinnati Bearcats. He is not the first potential candidate to address the opening. Missouri's Eli Drinkwitz deemed himself "not a candidate" while Arizona State's Kenny Dillingham and Duke's Manny Diaz both expressed their happiness at their current schools.
