Florida State men’s basketball is losing assistant coach and director of player development Chris Kent to the professional ranks. The Austin Spurs officially announced Thursday that Kent has been named head coach of the San Antonio Spurs’ NBA G League affiliate, ending his latest stint with the Seminoles after one season.
Kent joined head coach Luke Loucks’ inaugural Florida State staff ahead of the 2025-26 season, serving as both an assistant coach and director of player development. The Seminoles went 18-15 overall and 10-8 in ACC play during his season on staff, closing the year by winning 10 of their final 12 games.
Player development was a central part of Kent’s role in Tallahassee. Florida State credited him with helping develop Robert McCray
V, who earned third-team All-ACC honors, and LaJae Jones, who was selected by the Golden State Warriors with the No. 54 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.
The move to Austin represents a return to the NBA G League for Kent, who has spent much of his coaching career at the professional level.
Before returning to Florida State, Kent spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the Rip City Remix, the Portland Trail Blazers’ G League affiliate, from 2023-25. He previously served as an assistant with the Windy City Bulls and worked within the Chicago Bulls organization as a coaching intern and video coordinator. Earlier in his career, Kent was an assistant coach with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants from 2013-15.
Kent also has previous ties to Tallahassee. He worked as a Florida State graduate assistant from 2015-17 before spending the 2017-18 season as USF's director of player development.
He now takes over an Austin franchise that reached the G League playoffs last season after finishing the regular season 20-12. The Spurs ranked first in the G League in defensive rating when they clinched their postseason berth in March.
Kent’s departure creates another staff change for Loucks as Florida State continues preparations for the 2026-27 season.
