Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke with reporters after the Week 4 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. He addressed the unexpected benching of starting left guard Kingsley Suamataia.
“As far as the Kingsley (Suamataia) thing goes, so before you guys ask, that’s between Kingsley and I,” said Reid. “But we’ll figure it out, and down the road we’ll be better as a team for it, and Kingsley will be better for it.”
Entering the matchup with the Raiders, Suamataia was the NFL’s top left guard in pressure rate, allowing pressure at just 3.8%, according to NFL Next Gen Stats. Veteran offensive guard Mike Caliendo started in his place.
“Yeah, that’s between Kingsley (Suamataia) and I,” said Reid. “I might have stuttered when I said that, but that’s what
I meant. Kingsley and I will take care of that.”
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes shared his thoughts during his press conference but sided with Reid’s wishes.
“Yeah, I mean Kingsley (Suamataia) knows how important he is to the team,” said Mahomes, “and so, like coach, he’ll keep it between him and Kingsley, but at the end of the day, man, we have a guy like Mike Caliendo who’s played in a lot of big games and had a lot of reps. He stepped right in and did a great job against a really good defensive line, and so I have a ton of trust in him. And then we’ll get Kingsley back in the fold here soon.”
Suamataia started all 17 games at left guard in 2025 and was one of the few consistently available players throughout last season.
