Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes spoke with reporters on Wednesday. He opened up about embracing balance on offense, noting that the running game affects opposing defenses.
"You could even see the differences between Weeks 1 and 2; the (Indianapolis) Colts saw how committed we were to the run game and how well it worked." Mahomes said, "You could tell they were putting assets into stopping the run, so whenever you're doing the play fakes and linebackers are in the line of scrimmage, it opens up guys over the top of them."
Kenneth Walker III's exceptional play has transformed the offense, as they have relied on the running game often through two games. Mahomes had a breakout passing game, adding to the Colts' defensive frustrations.
"It's got to be a great balance that we have to have of being able to run it, run it, run it, then play-action at the right time. I thought Coach (Eric) Bieniemy and Coach (Andy) Reid did a great job of calling the perfect play action," said Mahomes, "the perfect movement plays at the perfect time, so that I had guys open for me to throw. We'll continue to get better and better at that and continue to run the football as well."
Mahomes led the way against the Colts, completing 32 of 47 passes (68.1%) for 382 yards and 3 touchdowns, posting a 114.0 rating.
